side projects
This guide attempts to catalogue all of Jawbreaker's studio recording sessions. Side projects during Jawbreaker's existence are also included (note that this rules out projects after Jawbreaker's demise, viz. Jets to Brazil, The Moons, Horace Pinker, etc.).
Non-LP songs: The name of the release on which the song appears is indicated in brackets next to the song title.
Unreleased songs are noted.
Original artists of covers are noted in parentheses.
Summer of 1986 or 1987 Thump demo
|
Unknown
|
Unknown
|
---|
- five (?) instrumental songs [unreleased]
Notes:
Chris believes that this demo was probably recorded in the summer of 1986, although he isn't certain of the year.
A former member of Magnolia Thunderpussy (Jon Liu's pre-Rise band) has provided the information that this "Thump" demo is composed of five or so instrumentals; thus, these recordings presumably predate Jon Liu's involvement with the band.

Notes:
Jon Liu sings lead vocals on all songs except Shield Your Eyes (Blake) and For Whoever (Chris). Shield Your Eyes appears on the Worlds in Shreds Vol. 2 compilation with a different vocal take, but the version with the original vocal remains unreleased. Torture is an early version of Caroline with a totally different vocal part (lyrics and melody have nothing in common with the February 3, 1989 recording).

- Equalized [Busy 7", Etc. 2xLP/CD]

- Rich [unreleased]
- Split [original mix: unreleased]
[remix: Jawbreaker/Samiam split 7" (No Idea fanzine #10), Etc. 2x/LP]
- World of Shit [unreleased]
- Caroline [original mix: unreleased] [remix: Brouhaha 7" compilation, Etc. 2xLP]
- Better Half [original mix: unreleased] [remix: Jawbreaker/Crimpshrine split 7", Etc. 2xLP/CD]
- If I Could [unreleased]
- Good 45 [unreleased]
Notes:
Demo #1 was distributed on homemade cassette tapes with photocopied inserts, but it was never officially pressed and released; hence, recordings from this session which appeared only on Demo #1 are still labeled "unreleased." The official songlist for Demo #1 was Equalized, Down, Rich, Split, World of Shit, Caroline, and Better Half. As such, If I Could and Good 45 may be considered Demo #1 "outtakes."
Equalized and World of Shit are excised from later "incarnations" (as Adam puts it) of the demo distributed by the band.
Caroline, Split, and Better Half were remixed on 8 Feb. 1991 by Vinny Fazzari and Adam Pfahler, and mastered by John Golden at K-Disc. In Caroline, the backing vocals are toned down. In Split, the vocals in the instrumental break contain more reverb, as do the words "I don't know" and "I don't care" in the verses; most notably, harmonies sung by Chris in verse are mostly removed. In Better Half, Chris's "come and gone"s sound much lower in volume and the song doesn't fade out.
While Rich and the original mix of Caroline are officially unreleased, they appear on a bootleg 7" entitled Old Glory.

- Busy [original mix: Busy 7"] [remix: Unfun LP/CD]
Note: Busy was remixed in January or February 1990 for inclusion on the Unfun LP/CD. The remix sounds more polished and includes additional reverb on the drums, lower bass presence, and increased guitar presence.

Notes:
There are two mixes of the song Bivouac, but they differ only in length; the vinyl version ends shortly after Blake's "Bivouac!" while the CD version continues and ends up being roughly ten minutes total.
Peel It the Fuck Down was mixed on 7 Jul. 1999 by Tim Green and Adam Pfahler.
Billy Anderson thinks that there was probably an alternate version of Parabola, but isn't sure whether it was an alternate mix or a totally different take.

- Boxcar [unreleased]
Note: Boxcar and The Boat Dreams From the Hill are the only unreleased outtakes from this session. The band rerecorded both songs in August of 1993; they decided after touring that the Albini recording of Boxcar was a little too slow, while the pre-chorus breaks in The Boat Dreams From the Hill sounded awkward.

- Shirt [Dear You 2xLP/CD (2004 Blackball reissue)]
Notes:
The promo-only Accident Prone CD has an edit of the song for radio airplay that runs only 3:51. The introduction is considerably shorter, and the entire instrumental break at the end of the song is cut out; the second chorus is replaced with the third chorus so that the song ends properly.
On the Back to School Geffen/DGC sampler compilation CD, the "intro edit" of Fireman runs only 3:43; the instrumental intro is cut, and the song starts with the arpeggiated chords.
Shirt was mixed by J. Robbins in the summer of 2003, and mastered by John Golden; it went unmixed for years because Blake thought it should have been recorded in a different key.
