Unfun LP / CD / CS
In print: CD only
Information:
Shredder Records - SH-07 (LP) - 1990 , SH-07CD (CD) - 1992
1st pressing: 200 on clear vinyl, 800 on blue vinyl; most of the clear ones were given to the band and sold on tour. On the front cover, "Jawbreaker" is written in green and "Unfun" is written in orange. The cover is printed on rough paper material.
Runout groove etchings (1st pressing):
side a: "SH-7-A First I seen him, then he wasn't there no more"
side b: "SH-7-B I was hauling ass"
2nd pressing vinyl: Black vinyl, last 1000 contain a different "A" side mix as indicated on the A-side runout groove (see below). On the front cover, "Jawbreaker" is written in orange and "Unfun" is written in green (note that the colors are reversed in comparison to the 1st pressing). The cover is printed on glossy material (the 1st pressing is not). However, all of the photos (including the one on the cover) look more washed out than on the 1st pressing.
Runout groove etchings (2nd pressing):
side a: "SH-7-A RE1" (note that the sentence as in the 1st pressing is absent)
side b: "SH-7-B I was hauling ass"
Tour edition: Blue vinyl
Vinyl test pressings: There are two distinct test pressings of Unfun. The second one was remastered when Shredder rejected the first one, complaining that it sounded too compressed;
Henry Yu (who funded the album for Shredder Records, which had never pressed any 12" records prior to Unfun) auctioned off a copy of the original test pressing some time ago. The following is an excerpt from his description of the item: "This is a Test Pressing of the original mix of UNFUN which Shredder rejected in favor of a subsequent remaster. There were test pressings of the remaster also and they are distinguished from the original mix by having "REMASTER" written on the labels. This Test Press has white labels with song titles written in black magic marker. One of the songs' name has the original title written, which is later changed to its final title on the remaster Test Press. The matrix number and writing on the inner groove is the same as the final pressing. There are no more than maybe 5 copies of this Test Press. Sonically I find the Original Mix and the Remaster very close in sound, but I have never compared song for song. It is definitely not subpar to the Remaster sonically."
(Note that although he calls the first test press the "original mix," implying that there was a remix, the subsequent second test pressing and the released LP were only remastered.)
CD pressings: The Whack & Blite E.P. is included on all CD pressings of Unfun. Earlier pressings come in a jewel case; the artwork for the back cover differs from the LP version and contains a blue and orange color scheme with a photo of the band and the 4 Fs symbol. The artwork for the front cover of the Whack & Blite E.P. is reproduced in the booklet. The earliest pressings of this version don't have barcodes.
Current pressings come in a digipak case and reproduce the artwork of the vinyl version more faithfully. Henry Yu wrote, "There are two pressings of the new digipak version. The first one is only 3000 copies. It has to do with the colors on the Whack and Blite part of the cover. The colors are bright, but they get muted in the second pressing of the digipak. I guess this is truer to the original artwork."
