The 4 Fs stand for the motto "Frisch, Fromm, Fr�hlich, Frei" ("Hardy, God-fearing, Cheerful, Free").
Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the founder of modern gymnastics, popularized it in the early nineteenth century.
